Sensitisation
Raw materials can cause allergic reactions through skin contact. A very familiar example is a nickel allergy. This very often occurs when costume jewellery is worn. Numerous substances can cause this reaction to occur, known as contact dermatitis. Therefore, new raw materials must be tested to see whether they harbour the potential to cause allergic reactions through skin contact. To date, this can only be tested in animal experiments (so-called local lymph node assays (LLNA)). This test was already developed as an alternative method in terms of "refinements" (reduced stress on animals) and is approved by OECD (OECD TG 429).In a research project, Phenion is reviewing in how far animal testing can be reduced and replaced with the aid of a new in vitro approach using cell cultures and Phenion´s own full thickness skin model.
