Genotoxicity

A significant component of today´s safety tests is the study of the capacity of substances to cause genetic alterations leading in the worst case to cancer. So far genotoxicity trials cannot be done without animal testing. Indeed, there are approved in vitro methods which often give false positive results due to their high sensitivity. According to current established testing strategies, substances which react positively will therefore be verified in in vivo tests in order not to lose the substance to a false positive result, an approach which will no longer be possible for cosmetic substances starting in 2009. The Phenion® Full Thickness Skin Model constitutes an innovative opportunity to test the mutagenic characteristics of substances on a model which is similar to "real-life" conditions in our daily contact with chemicals and raw materials, and which assists in mapping the aspect of metabolization through the skin. Therefore, Phenion is conducting an extensive research project on the development of a skin model-based genotoxicity test in cooperation with RCC-Cytotest Cell Research GmbH. Additional projects with external partners complement these activities.
