Eye Irritation

If irritating chemicals enter human eyes, they could induce such serious consequences as inflammation and in worst cases blindness. Therefore, eye-irritating properties of every substance must be analyzed before it can be produced and distributed as raw material for consumer products. Irritating substances and products must be labelled accordingly. The only test accepted by the authorities to assess eye irritation is the Draize test, which is very painful for animals and typically used on the eye of a live rabbit. Henkel has contributed to the replacement of the Draize test already for more than ten years. Phenion is now continuing this research in its laboratories as well as in cooperations with research partners, e.g. the University of Berlin, Germany.
