Soothing the Skin

Evidence of an in vitro skin-soothing effect is realized through determination of cell vitality and the release of inflammation mediators on the epidermis model.

The skin models are damaged once for one hour using SDS. After the initial damage Aqua demin., a cream formulation containing cortisone as control substances and the test formulations are applied to the skin model after the initial damage.

After the incubation period the amount of inflammation mediators, e.g. interleukin 1alpha (IL-1α), is determined in the supernatant medium and the remaining vitality of the cultures in the MTT test (methyl tetrazolium test) is measured.

The diagram shows the skin-soothing effect of two different cream formulations.
