HET-CAM (Henīs Egg Test Chorio-Allantoic Membrane)

The purpose of this test is to determine the irritation potential of substances. In this assay, the chorio-allantoic membrane (CAM) of fertilized hen eggs, which have been incubated for nine days, assesses local irritation properties after contact with mucous membranes or eyes.

The incubated henīs eggs are opened on day 9 and the chorio-allantoic membrane is exposed. Test substances are applied in liquid or solid form (e.g. powder) and reactions which correlate with the reaction time are documented. The classification of the substance according to the intensity of the irritant is taken from the reaction profile.
