Quality control process

OCT imaging improves quality assessment for Phenion Full-Thickness Skin Models

OCT is a non-invasive technology which generates an optical section through the examined tissue. With this method we confirm that the skin equivalent has differentiated as expected. Within a few seconds only, and without destroying the tissue, we scan the entire tissue, thus visualizing its integrity and proper structure regarding e.g. epidermal thickness and homogeneity of the product.

Our daily routine ensures that you are receiving only Phenion products which fulfill our high-quality standards. Starting with the human biopsy material, continuing with the isolated primary cells and ending with the fully differentiated skin equivalents, the production processes are carefully monitored to ensure that our pre-defined specifications are completely met.

We conduct a 100% quality control by scanning every single skin model with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) before its release for shipment. This animation exemplifies an OCT scan through a typical Phenion Full Thickness Skin Model. It reveals even epidermal differentiation over the whole area (the dense grey layer at the top) and the upper part of the dermal compartment filled with newly synthesized extra-cellular matrix proteins.
